Sounding our own cities
In 2019 the Sounding Cities duo is undertaking an exciting collaboration with Jessie Maryon-Davies to create an interactive show encouraging young people to explore their own urban environments creatively. The show, aimed at Key Stage 2 children, will introduce contemporary music and art in an engaging, participatory way and will be followed by a workshop where students will devise their own “Sounding Cities” piece inspired by the urban space they live in. The original idea for this project came from a series of workshops the duo presented at the MIAGI Cape Gate Centre in Soweto, South Africa. Through these workshops the duo collaborated with young musicians to create a piece inspired by their own experiences in the urban space of Soweto which was shared with friends and family.
Masterclasses
The Sounding Cities duo enjoys working with young composers and performers, workshopping new music and exploring ideas of collaboration. In 2018 the duo was invited to attend the South African Society for Research in Music composers conference as the resident ensemble. This role involved working intensively with young composers on new works for saxophone and clarinet and culminated in a performance to open the 2018 SASRIM Conference. The duo has also given masterclasses to young performers in South Africa and the United Kingdom, recently working with members of the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire Saxophone Department. Upcoming engagements include working with students at Trinity Laban and the Guildhall School of Music.
